It’s one thing to build; it’s an entirely different thing to build on a strong foundation.
Matthew 7 lays out a story right after Jesus finished His Sermon on the Mount. It tells of two men—both were building houses. The Bible says the first man was one who not only heard the Word, but also did the Word, and he built his house on the rock. So when the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew; the house remained because it was built on a sure foundation. The Bible calls this man wise. The second man is called foolish. He heard the Word but didn’t follow the actual teachings of Jesus. He built his house on the sand. When the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew, it fell. The Bible says this house has a great fall because it was built on an unreliable foundation.
What can we learn from this story?
- Be a doer of the Word, not just a hearer. This is a principle repeated commonly throughout Scripture. We’re called to not only hear the Word but allow it to be active in our lives and apply it.
- The rain fell, the flood descended, and the winds blew on both houses. We most often cannot control the trials and circumstances of life. However, we can control the foundation we will build upon? Are You Building on a Strong Foundation?
So this begs the questions: What are you building on? Is it your finances? Talent? Degree? Is it something else that’s like the sand that might stand for a little bit but eventually will have a great fall? Or will you allow the only solid rock that is Jesus Christ to be your firm foundation? It’s one thing to build; it’s an entirely different thing to build on a strong foundation. Will you allow the only solid rock that is Jesus Christ to be your firm foundation?
