Six Bible Verses for Comfort When You’re Hurting

God's comfort seoBy Jill Fierge

For as long as blankets have been a thing, mothers have been using them to keep their children warm and comfortable. Newborn infants come home from the hospital in a blanket, and people facing the end of their lives are kept comfortable with warm blankets. Healthcare professionals often cover patients with warm blankets when they arrive in hospital emergency rooms, as well as before and after surgeries.

What once may have been “just how we did things” has now proven to have great physical and emotional benefits. If you have ever experienced a hospital stay, you know the relief felt when bundled in a warming blanket. Even the strongest among us welcome comfort and that sense of protection when in a stressful or frightening situation. How are we different spiritually?

I have learned to rely on a “warm blanket” when I have felt alone or anxious or overwhelmed. That’s when I turn to the warmth and covering of the Word of God.

1. Deuteronomy 31:8

The peace and well-being found in the Word is unparalleled. “And the Lord, He is the One who goes before you. He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed” (Deuteronomy 31:8, NKJV).

2. Psalm 56:3

In those times I have felt afraid and longed for a warm blanket, He sends me,

“What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.”

“What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee” (Psalm 56:3, KJV).

The practice of using warm blankets in healthcare was originally designed for physical benefits only: to prevent hypothermia. However, research has indicated there is also great emotional advantages.

3. Jeremiah 31:3

The warm blanket of Scripture reminds us of the power of His blood to bring healing. When we feel rejected and unloved, we can look to Jeremiah 31:3 to be reminded, “The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.”

4. John 3:15

He loves you unconditionally.

5. Proverbs 18:10

He protects you unfailingly.

6. Jeremiah 30:17

He heals you undeniably.

Just as blankets surround and cover us, in turbulent times His peace surrounds us, and His blessings cover us. All of this covering is found in His Word. Our Creator loves and cherishes all. We are made by design in His image. When life’s burdens bring a cold, lonely wind into our lives, cover yourself in the warm blanket of promises found in His Word.
